JACK AND THE BEANSTALK

Story

Jack and the beanstalk:

  • Hello, I am Jack and this is my mother. We are very poor. We only have one cow.

  • Jack, go to the market and sell the cow.

  • Ok mum!

(He goes to the market, and on his way he finds an old man).

  • Hello young man. I have some beans for you if you give me your cow.

  • Mmm but mummy told me to sell the cow in the market.

  • Young man, these beans are magic!

  • Ok then! Here’s my cow! Look children, there are four beans. Let’s count them! One, two, three, and four!

  • Oh Jack, what have you done? Now we don’t have any money for food!

(She throws the beans out of the window).

  • Sorry mum, but the old man told me these are magic beans!

  • Let’s go to sleep.

(Jack wakes up and looks out of the window. There is a giant beanstalk).

  • Wow, the beans have grown and now there is a giant beanstalk. I’m going to climb it!

*Let’s count how many seconds Jack needs to get to the top of the beanstalk:one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten!

! Wow, that was very fast!

Look, there’s a castle. Let’s go inside!

Wow, in the big table there is one hen and one golden harp.

  • Fee, fi, fo, fum!! (loud voice)

  • Oh no! Someone is coming! (Jack runs into a cupboard).

  • Put an egg little hen! Sing for me harp!

(The egg put a golden egg; sound of the harp).

  • Mmm I am very tired, I am going to sleep. (snoring)

  • Now it’s my turn. I am going to take the hen and the harp.

(Suddenly the harp makes a noise and the giant wakes up).

  • Fee, fi, fo, fum! You can’t escape!

(Jack climbs down the beanstalk and the giant comes down after him).

*Let’s count how many seconds Jack needs to go down: one, two, three, four, five...

  • Mummy, help!

*Children, you have to help Jack. Say fast, fast, fast!

  • Oh dear! I’m going to cut down the beanstalk. Go away giant!

(The mother starts cutting down the beanstalk and the giant falls and runs away).

  • Now we are rich! Hooray!

Activities

Pre-telling

Before we tell them the story we have decided to do a pre-telling activity called “Jumping beans”. We will tell them that in the story it will appear some magic beans, and they will need to recognise them, so that’s why they have to pay attention to the different types of beans we show them, because they will also have to stand up and demonstrate the following actions for the game:

For “Runner beans” they should ran on their spot.

For “Jumping beans” children should jump up and down.

For “Jelly beans” they should say “yummy!”

And for “Magic beans” they should say “grow!”

The aim of this activity is that students listen and respond with actions, so we can see who understands the orders and those who don’t and wait to their classmates to do them and then, they copy the actions.

While-telling

We can find the while telling activity written in red bold, in the last post called "Jack and the beanstalk" . Its aim is that we get some feedback on how the children understand and follow the story and to review together the numbers from 1 to 10. So every time a number shows up in the story, children will have to repeat it.

Post-telling

Once we have told the students the story of Jack and the beanstalk we have decided to do this post-telling activity, called: “Guess who”. The aim of this activity is that children recognise the most important characteristics of the main characters of the plot: Jack, his mother, the old man and the giant. We will show the students the pictures of each one of them, and we will ask them, e.g.: Is Jack fast? Yes! Is the giant scary? Yes!

Here are the pictures of each character, and the adjective that goes with them:

FAST

                                                                                                                          GIANT

                                                                                                                          SCARY

                                                                                                                          LOUD

OLD

                                                                                                                                      ANGRY

                                                                                                                                       POOR

For the pre-telling activity we'll be using this four pictures and we will explain to the children which action goes with the picture.

For the post-telling we are going to use this other pictures of the main characters, that go attachted to different peculiarities, where the children have to answer different questions about them
