GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR SETTING UP AND USING ACTIVITIES

Once you have selected the activity or activities which you are going to use in class, you can keep this general checklist of tips in mind:

  • Prepare the language.

  • Use a familiar signal to get the children's attention.

  • Wait unitil everyone is quiet and attentive before starting to explain what to do.

  • Announce the general nature and purpose of the activity.

  • Establish or create a context.

  • Divide the class into pairs, groups or teams, if this is relevant for the activity.

  • Give clear instructions.

  • Demostrate how the activity works in practice.

  • Check that the children understand what to do before they start the activity.

  • If appropiate, model aloud procedures or thinking processes that children will need to go through themselves in order to be able to carry out an activity or task successfully.

  • Give a signal to start.

 

During and after the activity:

  • Allow the children to carry out the activity independently and responsibly.

  • Monitor discreetly.

  • Train the children to look up in order to let you know when they have finished doing a task or activity and always be ready with something esle for them to do.

  • Give feedback, check answers or invite individual children to report back or tell/show the rest of the class what they have done.

  • Conduct a learning review.
