WHAT'S HAPPENING TO ME ?

Story

This story is created for students who are in 5th of Primary. But, what are we going to teach with this story? Well, first, we want to tell them about body image because girls can feel under pressure to look like glamorous celebrities, often before they’ve finished growing. They might worry that they are too fat, or that their breasts are too big or too small. Some people think that this anxiety can even lead to depression and eating disorders; and boys worry about their looks as well, but usually less. Second, they are going to learn some verbal tenses as Present Continuous, Past Simple and Future Simple.

For this, we will tell them a fictional situation that happened in our class. As, for example, the boys laugh at some girls because they have bigger breasts.

I’ve always been a little bit strange. I was a shy girl, with not many friends..but it was fine, I was happy. Suddenly, in 5th course something happened to me. My body was changing so Iwas taller, thinner and my breasts were bigger.

At first, I was feeling like it wasn’t living in my own body. I wanted to hide my breasts and my entire body with wide clothes. But, one day...one of my classmates noticed that my body was different.

He started to bully me every day. He called me “cow” and “ugly”. He even tried to touch me; Other boys did the same, and nobody stood up for me. I didn’t know how to act, or how to feel.

But one day, something happened. I was crying in the girl’s bathroom and one of my classmates heard me. She came to me and told me that she understood the way I felt, because she was trying to hide her body too. We hugged during minutes and we decided to talk to our teacher.

He told us that our body changes, and it was something natural. The same day, he talked to the bullies and they never bothered us again. In fact, they were sorry about what they did. Some days later, a psychologist came to our classroom to talk to us about puberty and differences about boys and girls. It was a bit shameful, but we liked it.

So, now I don’t have to hide anymore. I like myself, I like my body, and I don’t have to be what I am not. My name is Lucy, and that’s my story.

Activities

Pre-telling activity

We will play a game called “Sentence round” and the aim is to complete sentences following a given starter, to take turns and to develop confidence and self-esteem; for this, we will use a small object as a soft ball to pass round the circle. Here, we could teach different verbal tenses.

This is the procedure:

  • Play music as a background to the activity.

  • Ask the children to sit in a circle.

  • Choose a sentence starter for them to complete which relates to the topic that you wrote before on the board.

  • Give one child the object to pass round the circle and invite them to complete the sentence with something which is true for them.

  • They then pass the object to the child next to them, who completes the sentence in a similar way, and so on round the circle.

While-telling activity

In here, they will choose a role. Some of them will be the “bullies”, some will be the girls who are bullied, and the rest will be class students and they have to choose if they want to defend or not the girls.

This activity is going to be made with “Storybird” and they have to use the verbal tenses we had learn and also the way they feel. They also can choose any images they like, it doesn’t matter if they are not about bullying.

Post-telling activity

At the end, we will play a game called “Three things about me”. The aim is to say if they liked or not the activity and tell to the rest of the class how the felt and why.

This is the procedure:

  • Ask the children to sit in a circle.

  • Ask to one of them this questions and make a discussion happens about their feelings, the correct way to act, and obviously, why our body changes.
