THE LITTLE MOUSE PEREZ
Story
This story that you are about to read is aimed for five-six year old children.
Pepito Pérez was a little town mouse (we imitate a mouse) . He lived with his family in a little (we make little circles with our hands) hole in the wall of a building. The hole was not very big but it was very comfortable and there was no lack of food.(we touch our tummy)
They lived next to a bakery and at night, he and his father used to go to take flour and everything they needed for eating.
One day Pepito heard a great racket in the top floor. And since he was a very curious mouse he climbed and climbed (we move as if we climbed) up the pipes until he arrived to the first floor.
There he saw a lot of machines, armchairs, flowers, pictures it seemed as if someone was going to settle there. The next day Pepito went up again to see what it was and he discovered something that he liked a lot. In the top floor they had set up a dental office. ( we open our mouth showing our teeth)
Since then, he used to go everyday to watch everything that Dr Jose Mª was doing. He watched and learnt, he watched again and took notes of everything he could in a small cardboard notebook. ( we do as if we wrote on a notebook)
After that, he practiced with his family all that he knew. He cleaned her teeth very well to his mother, he cured a toothache to her sister with a bit of medicine . ( we do as if we cleaned our teeth)
And this was how Pepito become famous. Mice from all parts came to be cured by him. Country mice with a bag full of food for him, town mice with hat and crane, small mice, big, fat, thin All of them wanted that the little mouse Pérez fixed their teeth.
But then, old mice started to come with a bigger problem. They did not have teeth and they wanted to eat nougat candy, almonds, walnuts and all they things they could not eat since they were young. ( we make sad faces)
Little mouse Pérez thought and thought how could he help those mice who rely on him. And, as always that he had a doubt, he went to the dental office to watch.
Activities
Pre-telling activities
Before we tell the children the story of The Little Mouse Pérez, we have chosen a pre-telling activity named “True or False?”. Its main objective is that children listen and respond verbally (yes/no) to some questions which are true or false. In that way, they will develop their spoken interaction skills and also their capacity of concentration and paying attention to what they’re being told.
The material that will be needed is Pepito Pérez the little mouse’s door.
First of all, we will show the children the door and we will tell them that they have to think whose door is it by asking questions, like:
- Do you think that a bear fits in this door?
- No!
- Perhaps a person?
- No!
- What about a little mouse?
- Yes!
When they get the right answer, we will tell them that it is Pepito Pérez the little mouse’s door and that he uses it in order to enter in every single house. Right afterwards, we will ask them if they know who Pepito Pérez the little mouse is and if he takes children’s toys, food, perhaps jewellery, and finally, children’s teeth. And of course, the right answer is “children’s teeth”.
We have decided to choose this activity because it gives us an opportunity to observe and evaluate which children respond properly and confidently, and which children wait and copy their classmates’ answers. And thus, it will prepare them to the story that will be told straight away.
While-telling
As we tell the story we will be hearing the words below and the children will have to imitate the different movements that we do:
Mouse: we imitate a mouse
Food: we touch our tummy
Climbed: we move as if we climbed
Dental office: we open our mouth showing our teeth
Notebook: we do as if we wrote on a notebook
Cleaned her teeth: we do as if we cleaned our teeth
They could not eat since they were young: we make sad faces
Post-telling activities
Once we have done the pre-telling activities and we have told the children the story of The little mouse Pérez, we have decided to do two post-telling activities which will reinforce and improve our students’ vocabulary.
-
First activity: poem about a tooth
In the first activity, we will reinforce words like “tooth”, “moved” and “fell out” with a writing activity. We will use a shaped poem to write a little song about a tooth that fell out (we will write it on the blackboard before). We have to keep in mind that we’re working with six-year-old students and so, instead of letting them draw their own tooth, we will give them a printed one. This tooth has a guideline, so our students could write the song in it.
Tooth
back and forth and in an out,
my tooth moved all about,
hey, my tooth fell out.
-
Second activity
In the second activity we will reinforce certain vocabulary that has appeared in the story, such as: cheese, mouse, dentist and tooth. The aim of this exercise is that kids deduce what objects are shown in the pictures, and to use and develop creative thinking skills. The materials that will be needed are the pictures of the hidden items that they will have to discover.
First of all, they will be shown the pictures and the teacher will ask: “What does this picture look like?” The children will have some time to think about it, and then they will have to express their thoughts about it, always taking turns and raising their hands. Once they have discovered what objects were hidden, we could ask them to draw them in a piece of paper and right underneath, they could write the names (since they will be learning how to write, the answers will be written on the blackboard so they can copy them).
Materials
For the pre-telling activity we will use the flashcard of a little dorr and we will ask questions about it to the children.
For the first post-telling activity we are going to use this printable of a tooth that the children will have to fill with the poem that will be given to them.
The materials that we are going to use for the post-telling activity are four unfilled pictures that have a characteristic shape and can guide the kids to the real object from our story. ( cheese ball, winkers and nose, caries and a dentist outfit).
