ADHD
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorder in which there are significant problems with executive functions that cause attention deficits, hyperactivity, or impulsiveness which is not appropiate for a person's age. These symptoms must begin by age six to twelve and persist for more than six months for a diagnosis to be made. In school-aged individual inattention symptoms often result in poor shcool performance. Although it causes impairment, particularly in modern society, many children have a good attention span for tasks they find interesting.
ADHD is estimated to affect about 6-7% of people aged 18 and under when diagnosed via the DSM-IV criteria.
So, as you can imagine, students with ADHD can have a second language. They can studey English! But, they need some tools to can control theirselves and pay attention.
There are some strategies that teachers can use to help this kind of students:
1. Arrange the learning environment in order to minimise distractions.
2. Use frquent eye contact.
3. Use checklists for each assignment and outline the tasks to be completed.
4. Focus on tangible, short-term steps rather than long-term plans.
5. Provide structure and routine.
6. Try to adopt positive descriptions for students.
7. Encourage positive self-talk and internal control.
